“GHANA FOOTBALL WILL BE DEAD IF LOCAL PLAYERS ARE NOT INVITED TO THE BLACK STARS”-EX-BLACK STARS DEFENDER SAM JOHNSON

Ex-Black Stars defender Sam Johnson has anticipated on the future of Ghana football saying the local league will be dead if local players are not selected to make the Black Stars squad ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

According to the former Ghana left back, local players should be giving the opportunity to play at a big stage such as the World Cup to enable them stay in the domestic league.

In an interview with Accra based radio station Montie FM, the former national star said local players will continuing to be in a haste to play their traits outside the country since it seems only foreign based players are being invited into the national team.

“Up to so many years now there is no local player in the squad. We went for the CHAN tournament and we saw some of the boys are ok, and if they can’t get into the senior national team, thus the real national team then what is the development we are talking about. At least there should be two players included”, he said.

“Why don’t we give a local player a chance into the squad? Some people are playing second division, some are injured, and some are not even getting playing time at their club. And somebody is here playing regularly. So they should stop saying Ghana football has developed. If they don’t do that is going to kill Ghana football because everybody will try to leave since they will realize they will never be invited to the national team. So they will go away and it will kill Ghana football”, he added.

There have been massive calls from Ghanaian pundits to include locally based players in the black stars squad to Brazil with names such as Kwabena Adusei, Abeiku Ainooson, Nuru Sulley and goalkeeper Stephen Adams being on the lips of many Ghanaian soccer fans.
Black Stars head coach Kwasi Appiah is expected to name a 30 man provisional squad on May 13.
