The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Professor Francis Dodoo has been appointed as a member of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) committee for athletes.
The Committee was established in 2005 to represent the views and rights of athletes worldwide, while providing insight and oversight into athletes’ roles and responsibilities as they relate to anti-doping.
Prof. Dodoo’s appointment took effect at WADA’s conference which was held in South Africa last year, where he (Dodoo) made a strong case for tougher sanctions for drug cheats.
The former Ghanaian athlete believes that athletes who use performance enhancing drugs forever have an advantage over their peers who have to rely solely on their daily training routines and sweat to achieve success.
Members of the Committee have a key role in helping WADA understand the challenges or vulnerabilities athletes face, as well as how WADA can lead in the development of strategies to not only detect, but also deter and prevent doping.
WADA promotes, coordinates and monitors the fight against doping in sport in all its forms worldwide.
The Secretary General of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Apokavi said, “The GOC is delighted to have Prof Dodoo on the committee.
“It is important that we continue to raise awareness about doping in sports in all its forms. We will continue to give Professor Dodoo all the support he needs to discharge his duties.”
