President of the Ghana
weightlifting Association, Ben Nunoo-Mensah says is surprised with the
excellent feat chalked by weightlifters Juliana Arko and Christian Amoah at the
Africa Youth games in Botswana.
The pair of Arko and Amoah
won three silver medals each in their respective events to place Ghana's name
on the medals table after swimming and badminton had been disappointing.
Arko, the SWAG weightlifter
of the Year, won silver in the 63kg event with a total of 140kg in her two
events, while Christian Amoah also won in the 77kg event with a total of 125kg.
He however lifted 100kg in the snatch and 125kg in the clean and jerk.
According to the President,
he was astounded with the performance of the two young Athletics especially
with Amoah whom he did not tip to win a silver medal.
“Is a bit surprising and
also unexpected. I knew Juliana was going to come up with a medal. I had even known
she was going to do much better than even the silver medal. But for Christain
let me be honest and say I thought he was going to come out with a bronze medal
and not a silver medal”, he told Power FM
The two Athletics who
represented Ghana at the competition were apparently given the standard three
medals each for placing second in their various categories.
The event which ended last
Sunday saw the Ghana weightlifting team winning six medals in total.
