Former Youth and Sports minister Hon.
E.T. Mensah has revealed that the non-competiveness of the Ghana League has contributed
to the fewer number of local players into the senior national team, the Black
Stars.
In an interview with Power FM, The
current Member of Parliament for Nico Prampram indicated that the weak nature
of the domestic top flight has also resulted in most of the Clubs struggling in
Africa.
“When
your big clubs are struggling, you don’t have a solid local Black Stars
(players). We are struggling because our league is weak. Who goes to watch
football now? Those days, they were playing English league alright but our
stadia was always full because the boys were playing very well”,he said.
There have been calls from many Ghanaian
football enthusiast for the inclusion of some local players into the Black
Stars ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup with names such as Stephen Adams, Nuru
Sulley and Kwabena Adusei on the lips of many.
Black Stars head coach Kwasi Appiah is
expected to name a 30 man provisional squad later this month ahead of the
mundial.
