Retired
referee Joseph Wellington says there have been mass improvements in the referee
fraternity after the May 9th disaster.
Today marks
exactly 13 years since the terrible incident in Ghana football (May 9th
disaster) which saw 126 Ghanaian football fans losing their lives at the Accra
Sports Stadium during the epic clash between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi
Asante Kotoko, after fans of the away team Asante Kotoko claimed centre referee
John Say who was officiating the
game had allowed in an offside goal, which eventually lead to disarray between
they and the police.
Speaking
with Montie FM, the retired FIFA referee stated that there has been great
development in their coalition ever since that sad incident, looking at the
sort of innovations the Association has brought on board.
“I can say
there has been great improvement in the referee fraternity after that incident.
During that time there wasn’t too much lessons for our various referees. But
now due the various causes that FIFA has organized for all the membership
Associations like the MA courses, it has made the interpretations of the laws
very easy for referees. So I can say refereeing today has improved than the
past”, he stated.
Ghanaian
referees have faced a lot of critics and assault from football fans which has
eventually lead to the demise of some referees in the country due to certain
decision they sometimes take during football games with 21 year old referee
Kyei Andoh being a typical example.
