Former Youth and Sports
minister Hon Papa Owusu Ankomah has called on Ghanaian clubs to educate their
supporters on the attitude of hooliganism at football centers.
The former minister was in
office at the time of the unfortunate tragic incidence in Ghana and Africa
football after the continent was hit with its worst stadium disaster on May 9th
2001 as a result of multiple of causes which killed 126 people at the Accra
Sports Stadium.
Football which is supposed
to unite people turned out to rather disunite people and succeeded in bringing
tiers and agony to the entire populace of Ghana.
In a tribute to the victims
of the May 9th catastrophe, Papa Owusu Ankomah advised club
officials in the country to educate their supporters on hooliganism at the
various stadia’s.
“I believe we need to more
level headed. I think that the various clubs ought to educate their supporters,
because almost every club has a supporters union. And even go further, I think
we should be disciplined”, he told Accra based Power FM.
“And is also important that
as it happens in the developed sporting nations like UK and other countries in
Europe. The misbehavior of fans could be visited on Clubs. They make sure the
supporters know that their misbehavior may attract sanction on their club and
those who can be identify could be prosecuted”. He added.
Today marks the 13th
anniversary of the disastrous occurrence that hit Ghana football.
