After setting a record at the World Cup as the highest
scoring African player, Asamoah Gyan once again gets his name in the good books
of FIFA after his goal celebration was voted the second best celebration at the
just ended FIFA World Cup in Brazil in a poll of top 5 celebrations at the
Mundial.
Gyan who is noted for his amazing way of celebrating whenever
he scores a goal transmitted his trade mark to the World Cup when he displayed a
wonderful dance with his team-mates after scoring in Ghana’s second group game against
Germany.
“Baby Jet” as he is usually called by his Ghanaian fans was
only surpassed by the Colombian players who also exhibited a wonderful dance at
the tournament to win the best goal celebration at the 2014 World Cup.
In 2011, it was reported that a 7-year old Sunderland fan
cried when he heard Gyan had decided to leave Sunderland to play in the Arab
Golf League for Al Ain, with the boy reportedly quoted saying “I love Gyan, I
like the way he dance”. Gyan upon hearing the news went to England to give the
boy a signed autograph jersey prior to Ghana’s friendly against England at
Wembley.
Former Cameroonian striker Roger Milla is one of the few
African players who had his goal celebration ranked among the best celebrations
by FIFA in the 1990 World Cup after scoring against Argentina.
The former Udinese, Rennes and Sunderland attacker has been
Ghana’s lead man for the past 10 years and currently holds the record as Ghana’s
all-time top scorer with 42 goals.
