Black Queens head coach Yusif Basigi has admitted stiff
competition from group opponents South Africa and Cameroon after the Queens
found themselves in what many describe as a “group of death”.
Ghana was drawn in Group B of the 2014 African Women’s
Championships which will be hosted by Namibia in October.
Basigi’s side who failed to qualify to the last edition of
the competition in Equatorial Guinea in 2012 booked their place in this year’s
championships after eliminating Ethiopia in the final round of qualifiers.
Although coach Basigi is highly optimistic of the Queens
progression from the group stages, he has admitted his side is bound to face
difficult test from South Africa and Cameroon.
“Cameroon eliminated us two years ago and we couldn’t qualify
to Championships. So we have to go for revenge this time around if we meet
them. But I cannot dispute the fact that they are a very strong and formidable
side”, Basigi told Peace FM.
“South Africa on the
other hand has really developed in women’s football. Although we beat them 1-0
during our preparation to face Ethiopia in the qualifiers. But we have to admit
they really gave us a run for our money”, he stated.
“So we have to know that there is no small country this
time around. So I really respect these two countries”.
The head coach was quick to add that the team is not only
focusing on qualifying to the World Cup but to win the African Women’s championships
for the first time in history.
“We are not only focused on qualifying to the World Cup,
but we want to bring the trophy to Ghana”, he added.
Ghana will be participating in her tenth African Women’s
Championships. The 2014 African Women’s Championships is scheduled to take
place between 11-25 October.
