The Black
Maidens of Ghana on Tuesday night piped Germany 1-0 to advance to the Quarter finals
of the 2014 FIFA Women World cup in Costa Rica.
Thanks to a
42nd min header from full back Gladys Amfobea. Germany had dominated
the pace of the game throughout the first 35 min before a tactical change made
by head coach Augustine Adotey in the 36th min when midfielder Stephany
Adomako came on for Samira Abdul Rahman saw the Maidens coming into the picture.
It was
Germany who showed real threat firing and testing the Ghana goalkeeper Azume
Adams with several attempts. But Ghana final got the break through after 15
year old left full back Amfobea pounced on with a powerful header through the
diving arms of Germany goalkeeper Brandt into the low bottom corner of the post
to register the only goal of the game.
The win
however sees the 2012 bronze medalist secure their place in the semi finals of
the competition with a game in hand. Ghana thus becomes the first country to
book a place in the second round of this year’s competition.
Coach
Augustine Adotey’s girls will now face Canada in their final group game on
Friday in Liberia.
